The Whole of LA in One Very Full Day

The Hollywood Sign at breakfast, Rodeo Drive by afternoon, a Malibu beach and a Santa Monica sunset by evening. LA is huge β€” but with a car and an early start, you can string the icons together.

We drove the whole thing: up to the Hollywood Sign for a short hike, down through Downtown and the Walk of Fame, over to Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive, out along the coast to El Matador Beach, and back for sunset at Santa Monica. Almost every sight was free β€” the entire day’s spend was parking, food, and coffee.

Out-of-pocket for the day (excluding the car rental and hotel): about $72 for two people. Here’s the full breakdown, with the honest tips.

πŸ’‘ The LA Golden Rule Β· It’s All About Parking

In LA, the attractions are free β€” parking is where the money goes, and where the stress lives. Our entire day of parking came to $10.30 because we parked smart: free lots at the Hollywood hike and Walk of Fame, and public street parking a five-minute walk from Santa Monica instead of the $20 beach lot. Master parking and LA becomes cheap.

The Honest, Firsthand LA Advice

πŸ’‘ Hollywood Sign Hike

Don’t overthink it. The hike is easy β€” about 10 minutes gets you to the picture-perfect photo spot with the sign behind you. No serious trekking gear needed. Go in the morning for softer light and fewer crowds, and parking at the trailhead was free for us.

πŸŒ… Santa Monica is best for sunset. Save it for the end of the day β€” the pier and beach light up beautifully as the sun drops. And don’t park in the Santa Monica beach lot ($20): we parked in LA public street parking about five minutes’ walk away for just $3. The short walk is worth $17.
πŸ–οΈ El Matador Beach β€” go early. If you want to swim or catch the sunrise, arrive first thing in the morning. It’s quieter, the light is stunning, and the sea caves and arches are at their best before the crowds. And the drive to El Matador along the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) is genuinely beautiful β€” ocean on one side the whole way. Build in time to enjoy the road itself.
⚠️ Downtown LA parking is expensive and a hassle. Don’t drive in expecting easy, cheap spots. Aim to park near Domino’s or a mall where rates are more reasonable, and walk from there. Same goes for Rodeo Drive β€” driving around Beverly Hills in the evening rush is a headache, so time it earlier if you can.
🌊 Got more time? Venice Beach (boardwalk, Muscle Beach, street performers) and wider Malibu both make excellent additional stops on this same coastal route. If your day runs long, either one slots naturally between El Matador and Santa Monica.
🍽️ Food & Drinks

Two Meals + Coffee. $62 for Two.

A Domino’s lunch on the go, a Santa Monica coffee at sunset, and an Indian dinner that β€” being honest β€” missed the mark. Total: $62 for 2 people.

πŸ’‘ Honest Food Note

We won’t pretend every meal is a winner. Mayura was a 2/5 for us β€” fine if it’s convenient, but not worth a detour. That’s the point of receipt-backed reviews: you get the misses as well as the hits, so you can spend your LA dinner budget on something better.
