Everyone calls it “Disneyland Los Angeles.” It isn’t in Los Angeles.

It’s in Anaheim, about 45 minutes south of Downtown LA on a good day and closer to 90 on a bad one. That single fact ruins more first visits than anything else — people book a Hollywood hotel, leave at 9am, and walk through the gates at 11:30 having already lost the best three hours of the day.

The other thing nobody tells you: this is a two-park resort, not one park. Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure sit facing each other across a courtyard. Picking the wrong one for your trip is a $150 mistake.

This guide is the pre-brief. Real 2026 prices. What actually changed this year. And the operational stuff — lockers, parking, mobile order, fireworks positioning — that decides whether you leave delighted or destroyed.

Know This Before You Book Anything

Six facts that change how you plan.

  • ✔ You need a ticket AND a park reservation. Most standard tickets require you to lock a date and a park in advance. Sold-out days are real.
  • ✔ One-day tickets are tiered by date. A single adult day runs roughly $104 on the cheapest tier and up to $224 on peak dates. Same park. Same rides. Just a different Tuesday.
  • ✔ Park Hopper is an add-on, not standard. Adding it to a 1-day ticket costs roughly $70–$90. And you can’t hop before 11:00 AM.
  • ✔ Multi-day is dramatically cheaper per day. A 2-day, one-park-per-day adult ticket sits around $335 — under $170 a day versus $224 for one peak day.
  • ✔ Skip-the-line is paid and separate. Lightning Lane Multi Pass starts around $34 per person per day and floats with demand. It is not included in your ticket.
  • ⚠ The ART shuttle bus is gone. Anaheim Resort Transportation shut down permanently on 31 March 2026. If your hotel listing still mentions “ART shuttle nearby,” that listing is out of date.
💡 INSIDER HACK

Before you buy at rack rate, check Disney’s live offers page. In 2026 they ran a kids’ ticket at $50/day and an Anaheim-resident adult day at $71 — both far below the public tier calendar. Offers rotate. Two minutes of checking can save a family $200.

Where It Actually Is — And How To Reach It

1313 Disneyland Drive, Anaheim, CA. Roughly 35 miles from LAX, 26 from Downtown LA, 14 from John Wayne Airport.

✈️ Fly into SNA, not LAX

  • John Wayne (SNA) is ~20 minutes away
  • LAX is 45–90 minutes in traffic
  • Long Beach (LGB) is a solid middle option
  • SNA fares are often only slightly higher — the transfer saving usually wipes out the gap

🚗 Driving

  • I-5 south from LA — exit Disneyland Drive
  • Coming north on I-5? Exit for the Toy Story lot instead
  • Leave LA before 7:00 AM or after 10:00 AM
  • Budget $40/day for parking (details below)

🚆 Train + bus

  • Amtrak Pacific Surfliner or Metrolink OC Line → ARTIC station
  • ARTIC is ~2 miles from the gates
  • From ARTIC: OCTA Route 50, or a short rideshare
  • The old free ART transfer no longer exists

🚌 Budget route from LA

  • FlyAway bus LAX → Union Station
  • Metrolink Union Station → ARTIC
  • Roughly $20 total, roughly 2 hours
  • Doable solo. Painful with kids and luggage.
⚠️ THE 2026 TRANSPORT TRAP

ART carried over 8 million riders a year and connected 80+ hotels to the gates. It died on 31 March 2026 and nothing has fully replaced it. Before you book any off-site hotel, message them directly and ask one question: “Do you run your own shuttle, and what are the times?” Many now do. Many don’t. Assume nothing.

Two Parks. Which One Do You Actually Pick?

This is the single biggest decision of your trip. Get it right and one day is enough.

PARK ONE

Disneyland Park

Opened 1955. Sleeping Beauty Castle. The original.

PICK THIS IF
  • It’s your first ever Disney park
  • You’re travelling with under-10s
  • You want Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
  • You want the castle photo
HEADLINERS

Rise of the Resistance · Indiana Jones Adventure · Space Mountain · Pirates of the Caribbean · Haunted Mansion · Matterhorn · Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

PARK TWO

Disney California Adventure

Opened 2001. Turning 25 in 2026. Bolder, faster, better food.

PICK THIS IF
  • Your group is teens and adults
  • You care about thrill rides
  • You want the best food and drink
  • You’ve already done a Disney castle park
HEADLINERS

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! · Radiator Springs Racers · Incredicoaster · WEB SLINGERS · Soarin’ · Toy Story Midway Mania · World of Color

👉 1 DAY vs 2 DAYS vs 3 DAYS

1 Day

  • Pick one park. Do not hop.
  • Disneyland Park for first-timers
  • Rope drop is mandatory
  • Realistically: 8–11 rides
  • You will miss things. Accept it.

2 Days

  • The sweet spot for most people
  • One full day per park
  • Cheaper per day than two singles
  • Time for shows, not just queues
  • Add Hopper only on day two

3 Days

  • For families and Disney people
  • Day 3 becomes a repeat-favourites day
  • Sleep in once without guilt
  • Lowest per-day ticket cost
  • Hopper genuinely pays off here

What Actually Happens When You Arrive

The first 60 minutes are the part nobody prepares you for.

  • Parking lots open 1 hour before the park. Not 30 minutes. One hour. That’s your target arrival.
  • Then there’s a tram. Park, walk to the escalators, queue for the tram, ride to the esplanade. Add 15–25 minutes.
  • Security bag check. Metal detectors and bag search. Travel light and you’ll walk through a separate no-bag line in seconds.
  • The esplanade splits. Disneyland Park is left, California Adventure is right. Lockers and picnic tables sit between them.
  • Ticket scan + finger scan. Have the app open with your ticket loaded. Do not be the person hunting for a confirmation email at the turnstile.
  • Main Street holds you. On some mornings guests are held on Main Street until official opening, then released. Stand at the front of that crowd, not the back.
💡 INSIDER HACK

Total realistic gap between “arrived at parking gate” and “standing in a ride queue” is 60–75 minutes. Work backwards from park opening and set your alarm accordingly. This one calculation is worth more than any skip-the-line pass.

Rides, Hours, The App And The Paid Lanes

The operating system of your day.

Park hours

  • Disneyland Park typically runs longer than California Adventure
  • Common pattern: 8:00 AM open, 10:00 PM–midnight close on busy dates
  • Quieter weekdays close earlier — sometimes 9:00 PM
  • Hours are published a few weeks out and do change

The Disneyland app is not optional

  • Live wait times for every attraction
  • Mobile Order for food — the single biggest time saver in the park
  • Your tickets, park reservation and Lightning Lane passes live here
  • Entertainment schedule, updated daily
  • Download it and log in before you fly — park wifi at rope drop is grim

Lightning Lane, explained without the marketing

Option Rough cost What it gets you
Standby Free The normal queue. Fine on slow days.
Single Rider Free Massive time saving on select rides if you’ll split up.
Multi Pass From ~$34 pp/day Book return times across ~12 rides at Disneyland, ~9 at DCA. PhotoPass included. Covers both parks.
Single Pass Varies by ride/date One-off purchase for the top-tier ride not covered by Multi Pass.

Buy Multi Pass up to 3 days ahead (7 days for resort hotel guests). Same-day pricing is usually higher, and it must be activated by entering a park.

✔ SMART MOVE
  • Buy Multi Pass only on your busiest, most expensive-tier day
  • Book your first Lightning Lane the moment you’re eligible
  • Use Single Rider on Radiator Springs Racers and Matterhorn
  • Ride the biggest headliner within 20 minutes of opening
  • Save the slow, indoor, all-weather rides for 1–4 PM peak crowds
✖ TOURIST MOVE
  • Buying Multi Pass on a dead January Tuesday with 15-minute waits
  • Arriving at 11 AM then paying to fix the queues you created
  • Wandering Main Street shops for 40 minutes at rope drop
  • Queuing 75 minutes for a ride you could do at 9 PM in 20
  • Doing Park Hopper on a single day and losing an hour to the walk
📍 2026 CHANGE WORTH KNOWING

Early Theme Park Entry for Disney hotel guests was replaced in January 2026. Guests at the Grand Californian, Disneyland Hotel and Pixar Place now get one complimentary Lightning Lane Multi Pass per person, per stay instead of daily early access. If you booked a Disney hotel purely for the early entry, that reason no longer exists.

Do Not Miss These On A First Visit

If you only remember one list from this article, make it this one.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Still the most ambitious ride Disney has built. Do it first thing or with a pass. Nothing else in the resort compares.

Pirates of the Caribbean

The Anaheim original is longer and better than every overseas copy. Ride it. Then ride it again after dark.

Haunted Mansion

From late August it becomes Haunted Mansion Holiday, the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay. 2026 marks its 25th year.

Indiana Jones Adventure

Exists only at Disneyland. The queue is half the experience — don’t rush through it.

Radiator Springs Racers

The best ride at California Adventure and the longest queue. Single Rider line is your friend here.

Walking Main Street at night

Not a ride. Still the memory people keep. Do it once slowly, with a snack, no agenda.

The Hacks Nobody Puts In The Brochure

Tested, unglamorous, and they work at every Disney park.

  • 💡 You can bring your own food and drink in. Sealed snacks, sandwiches, refillable bottles — all fine. No glass containers, no loose ice, no alcohol. A packed lunch cuts $60 off a family day.
  • 💡 Free ice water at any quick-service counter. Just ask. Bottled water inside the park is a pure tax.
  • 💡 The last 90 minutes are the emptiest. Everyone drifts to the fireworks and then to the exit. Ride queues collapse right after the show while Main Street is a wall of people.
  • 💡 Eat at 11:00 AM or 3:00 PM. Never 12:30. You’ll save 30 minutes and eat somewhere you actually chose.
  • 💡 Mobile Order 60–90 minutes ahead. Slots sell out. Book your lunch window while you’re standing in a morning ride queue.
  • 💡 Ask a Cast Member for a celebration button. Free. Birthday, first visit, anniversary. It changes how the entire day treats you.
  • 💡 Bring a power bank. Your phone is your ticket, your map, your food order and your camera. A dead phone is a ruined day.
  • 💡 Wear shoes you’ve already broken in. Expect 20,000+ steps. This is the least glamorous tip and the one people regret ignoring.
💡 THE ONE MOST PEOPLE MISS

Ride wait times are highest between 12:00 and 4:00 PM. That’s exactly when the indoor, high-capacity, air-conditioned rides — Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Small World, Soarin’ — are moving fastest. Flip your day: thrill rides at open and after 8 PM, dark rides in the middle. You’ll do 40% more with the same feet.

Food And Lockers: The Boring Stuff That Saves Your Day

🍴 Eating well without overspending

  • Budget roughly $40–$70 per person per day if you buy everything inside
  • Quick service mains run about $15–$22
  • Galaxy’s Edge does the best value plates — Ronto Wraps and Docking Bay 7
  • Bengal Barbecue skewers are the cheap, fast, underrated option
  • Blue Bayou (inside Pirates) is the splurge sit-down — reserve well ahead
  • California Adventure has the stronger food scene overall, including Pym Test Kitchen
  • Portions are large. Two adults can genuinely share one quick-service main plus a side

🔒 Lockers, decoded

  • Small lockers around $7/day, large around $10
  • Esplanade lockers offer more sizes — roughly $7, $10, $12 and $15
  • Jumbo lockers exist only in the esplanade picnic area and fit a carry-on suitcase
  • One flat daily fee with unlimited in-and-out access
  • In-park lockers (Main Street, Buena Vista Street) close when the park closes
  • Nothing can be stored overnight, anywhere
  • Free lockers sit near Grizzly River Run for the soaking-wet ride
  • Card payment only — these machines don’t take Apple Pay
💡 INSIDER HACK

If you’re park hopping, or flying out the same night, take the esplanade locker — not the in-park one. It’s outside the turnstiles, reachable from Downtown Disney, and it doesn’t lock you out when one park closes early. Pair it with a jumbo locker and you can do a full park day between hotel checkout and your flight.

Parking: Where To Go And What It Costs

Rates rose in late 2025 and these are the 2026 numbers.

Option Price / day Worth it?
Standard — Mickey & Friends / Pixar Pals / Toy Story $40 Yes. This is the default.
Preferred — lower floors, closer to escalators $60 Saves 5–10 min. Only worth it with a stroller or mobility needs.
Oversized vehicle / RV — Toy Story lot only $45 Only option if you’re over 13’10”.
Downtown Disney lot $10 first hour 3 free hours with a $20 Downtown Disney purchase. Not for a full park day.
  • Your ticket covers the whole day — leave and come back, no extra charge
  • All lots open 1 hour before the earliest park opening
  • Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals share one entrance — you don’t choose which you get
  • Height limit at both structures is 13 feet 10 inches
  • EV charging is available at Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals, billed separately by ChargePoint
  • Coming north on I-5? Toy Story is the natural exit and often the faster entry
✔ SMART MOVE

On packed mornings the Toy Story lot is genuinely faster than the structures. It runs its own security checkpoint, so you clear bag check before boarding the shuttle and get dropped near the gates already screened. Everyone treats it as second choice. On a Saturday in October, it isn’t.

The Night Show: Parades And Fireworks

This is where the day either peaks or collapses. Positioning matters more than timing.

What’s running right now (Aug–Oct 2026)

  • Halloween Time runs 21 August – 31 October across both parks
  • Halloween Screams plays nightly at Disneyland Park — projections every night, fireworks on select nights (usually weekends)
  • Mickey and Friends Halloween Cavalcade runs twice daily — a short parade, not a full nighttime one
  • World of Color – ONE returned to California Adventure on 10 August
  • Fire of the Rising Moons lights up Galaxy’s Edge on select nights with a Star Wars score
  • Oogie Boogie Bash is a separately ticketed after-hours party on select nights — it is not included in your day ticket
⚠️ HONEST HEADS-UP

Disneyland’s 70th anniversary ended on 9 August 2026. Paint the Night and Wondrous Journeys gave their final performances on 20 August 2026. If you’re reading an older guide promising a nightly LED parade — that guide is out of date.

The Frightfully Fun Parade is also retired for 2026 due to construction blocking the California Adventure parade route. It’s been replaced by Madame Leota’s Swinging Wake, a Haunted Mansion street party, at Oogie Boogie Bash only.

Where to stand

  • Central Plaza, in front of the castle — the best all-round view, and the only spot where you catch the castle projection effects properly
  • Main Street, U.S.A. — good sightlines, easier to grab later, but you’re facing a wall of people on exit
  • “it’s a small world” facade — a genuinely underrated alternative with its own projections and far fewer people
  • Galaxy’s Edge — if you’re already there, don’t cross the park. Watch Fire of the Rising Moons instead
  • Paradise Bay, California Adventure — for World of Color, use the app’s virtual queue for a designated viewing area
💡 INSIDER HACK

Fireworks get cancelled for high wind — but the projection show still runs, so you still get the show. Second: don’t stake a spot 90 minutes early. Ride something in the last hour instead, walk up 15 minutes before, and take a decent-not-perfect view from the hub. You’ll trade 10% of the view for a whole extra headliner ride.

Logistics At A Glance

Getting there

  • Fly SNA if you can, LGB second, LAX last
  • Drive: I-5, exit Disneyland Drive
  • Train: Amtrak or Metrolink to ARTIC
  • Rideshare drop-off is at the Toy Story lot area

Local transport

  • ART shuttle is permanently closed
  • OCTA Route 43 runs Harbor Blvd
  • OCTA Route 50 runs Katella Ave
  • Nearest OCTA stop is a ~2 min walk from the resort
  • Uber and Lyft are now the default

Where to stay

  • Harbor Blvd hotels — walkable, best value, 5–15 min to gates
  • Good Neighbor hotels — many now run their own shuttle
  • Disney hotels — Grand Californian, Disneyland Hotel, Pixar Place. Premium price, one free Lightning Lane per stay
  • Confirm shuttle details in writing before booking

Quick tips

  • Check the app for ride refurbishments before you go
  • Layers — Anaheim evenings get cold, fast
  • Sunscreen even in winter
  • Rain ponchos cost triple inside
  • Rider Switch lets both parents ride without queuing twice

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Every one of these is avoidable. Most people make at least three.

  • Booking a Hollywood or Santa Monica hotel and commuting daily. You’ll lose 3 hours a day to the I-5 and hate every one of them.
  • Buying a peak-tier ticket when a cheaper tier date sits two days away. Same park, same rides, up to $120 difference.
  • Adding Park Hopper to a single-day ticket. You can’t hop until 11 AM, and the crossing plus re-entry burns close to an hour of a day you already paid a premium for.
  • Assuming the ART shuttle still runs. It closed in March 2026. Hotel listings and old blog posts have not caught up.
  • Buying Lightning Lane on a quiet day. On a low-tier January weekday, half the paid rides are walk-ons anyway.
  • Arriving at official opening time. That’s when the tram queue peaks. Aim for one hour earlier — the lots open then for a reason.
  • Not checking the entertainment schedule the morning of. Fireworks run on select nights, not every night. People plan whole evenings around a show that isn’t scheduled.

One park, one plan, one very good day
