The US visa isn’t won with a fat file of documents.
It’s won in a 2โ3 minute conversation at a window. Most officers never open your folder.
The real battle? Getting a slot โ and walking in with a story that holds together.
๐ This guide covers both. For Indian passport holders living in India and in the UAE.
B1/B2 Visa in Simple Words
- โ B1 = business visits (meetings, conferences). B2 = tourism, family, medical.
- โ Indians usually get one combined B1/B2 visa.
- โ Typical validity for Indians: 10 years, multiple entry.
- โ Each visit: the US border officer decides your stay โ usually up to 6 months.
- โ No work, no paid gigs, no study courses. Pure visit.
- โ The visa only lets you arrive and ask to enter. Entry is decided at the US airport.
The law assumes you want to immigrate โ that’s “Section 214(b)”. Your only job at the interview: prove you’ll come back. Everything in this guide serves that one goal.
What Changed in 2025โ26 (Read This First)
Since September 2025, you must interview in your country of nationality or residence. Flying to Bangkok or Frankfurt for a faster slot is over.
Dropbox (no-interview) now only covers B1/B2 renewals where the old visa expired within 12 months and you were 18+ when it was issued.
Passed into law in 2025. Charged only if your visa is approved, on top of the US$185 fee. Check your embassy page for whether it’s being collected yet.
DS-160 asks for handles you’ve used in the last 5 years. List them all. Missing one can look like hiding.
โ ๏ธ US visa rules shift often. Confirm on the US Embassy India or US Embassy UAE visa pages before you pay.
Living in India vs Living in UAE
| ๐ฎ๐ณ Indian living in India | ๐ฆ๐ช Indian living in UAE | |
|---|---|---|
| Where to interview | New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata โ any city | US Embassy Abu Dhabi or Consulate Dubai โ with a valid UAE residence visa |
| Visits needed | Usually 2: biometrics at VAC, then interview | Usually 1: biometrics and interview together |
| Wait time (Sept 2026) | Kolkata ~6.5 mo ยท Chennai ~7.5 ยท Delhi ~10 ยท Mumbai ~11.5 ยท Hyderabad ~12 | Slots reported a year out in late 2026 |
| Fee paid in | INR | AED |
| Officer focuses on | Job, income (ITR), family and property in India | UAE job and residence plus ties back to India |
| Watch out | Long queues in Mumbai & Hyderabad | Residence visa expiring soon, or a recent job change |
- You can choose UAE or India โ you’re a resident of one, national of the other.
- Compare both queues. Book wherever you get the earliest real date.
- Interviewing in India? Be ready to explain why โ “faster slot” is a fine, honest answer.
How to Apply: Step by Step
- Check your passport. Valid 6+ months beyond your trip. Old passports in hand.
- Fill the DS-160 on the official CEAC website. Save the confirmation page with barcode.
- Create your appointment account. Use the booking link from the India or UAE embassy page โ never a Google ad.
- Pay the US$185 fee. Receipt is valid for 365 days. Book within that window.
- Book the appointment. India: biometrics (VAC) slot + interview slot. UAE: usually one slot.
- Biometrics. Fingerprints + photo. 10โ20 minutes. Carry passport, DS-160 page, appointment letter.
- Interview. Short Q&A at a window. Decision usually on the spot.
- Passport back. Approved? They keep your passport, return it with the visa in ~3โ10 working days.
The DS-160 Form: Fill It Right
๐ How it works
- Online only, in English. Takes 60โ90 minutes.
- Note your Application ID on the first page.
- Session times out after ~20 min idle. Click “Save” often.
- Choose the same location you’ll interview at.
- Upload a photo: 2ร2 inch, white background, no glasses.
๐ Keep ready before you start
- Passport + old passports
- Last 5 trips abroad with dates
- Employer address, phone, salary
- US contact or hotel address
- Social media handles (last 5 years)
- Parents’ names and dates of birth
โ ๏ธ DS-160 Mistakes That Cost People Visas
- Hiding a past refusal โ any country. The officer can see US records. Always say yes.
- Salary that doesn’t match your salary slips or ITR.
- Trip length that’s too long. 3 weeks of holiday sounds real; 5 months sounds risky.
- Missing social media handles. Include old and inactive ones.
- UAE residents: listing the India address as “home”. Your current address is the UAE one.
- Agent filled it, you never read it. You’ll be questioned on every line.
- Wrong location selected. DS-160 location must match your interview city.
Documents: Must-Carry vs Just-in-Case
๐ Officers rarely ask for documents. Carry them anyway โ but only show what they ask for.
โ Must carry
- Current passport + all old passports
- DS-160 confirmation page (barcode)
- Appointment confirmation letter
- Fee receipt
- UAE residents: Emirates ID
๐ฎ๐ณ Supporting โ India
- Salary slips (3 months) + employment letter
- ITR for 2โ3 years
- Bank statements, 6 months
- Business: GST, registration, ITR
- Property papers, family details
๐ฆ๐ช Supporting โ UAE
- Salary certificate + leave approval
- UAE bank statements, 6 months
- Tenancy contract / title deed
- Trade licence (business owners)
- Ties in India: property, family
Carry the host’s invitation letter, US status proof (green card, visa or passport copy) and address. Parents visiting children: Kolkata started priority slots for parents 50+ in May 2026 โ check if it’s still on.
Not required. Don’t book non-refundable anything before the visa. A rough plan in your head is enough.
Getting a Slot: The Real Game
- ๐ Book the first date you see. Then hunt for an earlier one.
- ๐ Check at odd hours. Cancelled slots reappear randomly โ late night and early morning are popular.
- ๐ Reschedules are limited. Don’t keep swapping; you can lock yourself out.
- ๐ Check every city. In India, Kolkata and Chennai have often been faster.
- ๐ Emergency appointment exists for medical emergencies, funerals and urgent business. Request it only with proof.
- ๐ Live wait times: use the official State Department wait-time tool.
- Pay the fee early, start slot-hunting
- Use only the official portal
- Plan the trip around the visa, not the reverse
- Paying an agent โน10,000+ for a “bot slot”
- Sharing your login with strangers
- Booking flights before the interview
โ ๏ธ Bots and slot-selling break the embassy’s rules. Accounts can be cancelled โ along with your fee.
The Interview: What Really Happens
- Queue outside. Only your document folder goes in. No phones, bags, smartwatches.
- Security check, then a token or queue number.
- Document check counter. Passport and DS-160 page verified.
- Fingerprints (if not done at the VAC).
- The window. Standing, not sitting. Glass partition. Mic.
- 2โ3 minutes of questions. Often less.
- Decision: passport kept = approved. Passport + letter returned = refused or more checks.
โณ Total time inside: 1โ3 hours. Most of it is queuing.
โ Questions you’ll likely hear
- What’s the purpose of your trip?
- Who are you travelling with?
- What do you do? How long there?
- How much do you earn?
- Who’s paying for the trip?
- Do you have relatives in the US?
- Which countries have you visited?
- UAE residents: how long in the UAE? Why apply here?
๐ก How to answer
- Short, direct, true. One or two lines.
- Answer only what’s asked. No speeches.
- Don’t memorise scripts โ it shows.
- Match your DS-160 exactly.
- Don’t push documents through the window unasked.
- Hindi or another language? You can ask for it.
- Stay polite even if it’s going badly.
“Two weeks โ New York, Washington and Niagara with my wife. I’m a finance manager in Dubai, back at work on the 20th.”
“Sir, I want to see America, my cousin is there, maybe I’ll stay some months and see opportunitiesโฆ”
What It Really Costs ๐ฐ
| Item | USD | When paid |
|---|---|---|
| Visa application (MRV) fee | $185 | Before booking ยท non-refundable |
| Visa Integrity Fee | $250 | Only if approved, once collection starts |
| Visa issuance (reciprocity) fee | $0 | None for Indian B1/B2 |
| I-94 arrival record | $6 | At the US land border / online |
| Total if approved | $185โ435 | Depends on integrity fee status |
- ๐ India pays in โน and UAE pays in AED, at the embassy’s exchange rate. US$185 โ AED 680.
- ๐ The US$185 receipt is valid for 365 days from payment.
- โ ๏ธ Refused? The US$185 is gone. No refunds.
- ๐ก Integrity fee may be refunded later if you follow all visa rules โ not guaranteed.
Approved, Refused or “Blue Slip”?
โ Approved
- Officer keeps your passport
- Visa stamped and returned in ~3โ10 working days
- Check name, birth date, “B1/B2”, 10-year expiry
- Error? Report it immediately
โ Refused under 214(b)
- Means: ties not strong enough “today”
- Not a ban. You can reapply anytime
- Reapply only when something has changed
- New DS-160, new fee, new interview
๐ 221(g) โ more checks
- Coloured slip asking for documents or more time
- Submit what’s listed โ nothing extra
- Track on the CEAC status page
- Can take weeks to months
At the US Airport
- โ CBP officer asks: why, how long, where staying, return date.
- โ Carry return ticket, hotel or host address, some proof of funds.
- โ Fingerprints and photo again. Normal.
- โ Your permitted stay goes into an online I-94 โ not the visa expiry.
- โ Check your I-94 on the official CBP site after landing.
- โ Abu Dhabi flyers: US immigration happens before you board (preclearance). Land like a domestic flight.
Old passport has a valid US visa? Carry both passports. The visa stays valid โ no need to transfer it.
Practical Lessons From Real Applicants
- ๐ The folder rarely opens. Most approvals happen without a single document shown.
- ๐ Couples, families: one speaks. Usually the main applicant answers for all.
- ๐ Travel history helps a lot. Schengen, UK, Singapore, Japan visas show you return.
- ๐ Young, single, first trip? Higher refusal risk. Strong job proof matters most.
- ๐ Recent job change? Expect a question. Have the clear one-line answer ready.
- ๐ Kids under 14 often aren’t questioned โ but parents’ answers cover them.
- ๐ Weather and queues: Delhi and Mumbai queues are outdoors. Carry water, wear comfortable shoes.
- ๐ Lockers outside are informal and cost extra. Better: leave your phone with someone or in the car.
Logistics
๐ข Getting There
- India: VAC first, then embassy/consulate
- UAE: Abu Dhabi embassy or Dubai consulate
- Address is on your appointment letter
๐ Local Transport
- Taxi or metro โ no parking near most posts
- Coming from another city? Arrive a day early
- Biometrics and interview can be days apart
๐จ Stay Options
- Book a hotel close to the consulate
- Free-cancellation rate in case of reschedule
- Early slots = no morning traffic stress
โก Quick Tips
- Clear plastic folder only
- No electronics, no food
- Choose courier delivery for the passport
Common Mistakes โ ๏ธ
- โ ๏ธ Booking flights before the visa. Slots move; money gets stuck.
- โ ๏ธ Lying about a past refusal. That can mean a permanent bar. Being refused is not.
- โ ๏ธ Rehearsed, robotic answers. Officers hear thousands. Just talk.
- โ ๏ธ Saying “maybe I’ll look at jobs”. Instant refusal.
- โ ๏ธ UAE visa expiring in 2 months. Renew first. It weakens your residence tie.
- โ ๏ธ Overstaying your I-94. Even a few days can cancel your visa.
US Visitor Visa FAQs
Can an Indian living in UAE apply in India?

Can I still interview in Thailand, Singapore or Germany?

Do I need flight tickets or hotel bookings?
No. The US doesn’t ask for them. A clear trip plan you can explain is enough.
How much bank balance do I need?
No fixed number. It should comfortably cover the trip and match your income. Officers rarely check it โ your job and ties matter more.

How soon can I reapply after a refusal?
Any time. But the same profile usually gets the same answer. Wait until something meaningful changes.

No. Everything is online. If someone helps with the DS-160, read every answer yourself before submitting.
Can I visit Canada or Mexico with my US visa?
Canada: a US visa can make you eligible for Canada’s eTA when flying in. Mexico: valid US visa holders can usually enter as tourists. Check both rules before you go.
