Japan Visa in Simple Words

Japan’s officers can’t ask you questions. So your itinerary and bank statement must answer everything: where, when, how paid, and why you’ll return.
What’s New in 2026
From 1 July 2026 Japan raised visa fees for most nationalities. Indian passport holders still pay a concessional ₹500 — single or multiple entry.
Single-entry tourist visas can now be issued as an eVisa — a digital notice on your phone instead of a sticker in your passport.
Since March 2026, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi and Puducherry take appointments only — no walk-ins. Mumbai intake moved fully to VFS in April 2026.
Japan scrapped the separate transit visa in July 2026. Stepping out on a layover now needs a regular short-stay visa.

Apply where you live. Your UAE residence visa should be valid well beyond your return date. Your emirate decides Dubai or Abu Dhabi VFS — not your choice of convenience.

How to Apply: Step by Step
- Fix your dates. Apply within 3 months of travel — not earlier.
- Find your centre. India: VFS Japan India — pick the one covering your state. UAE: VFS Japan UAE.
- Download the checklist + forms from that page: application form and “Schedule of Stay”.
- Book refundable flights and hotels. Japan wants confirmed reservations.
- Fill the form — typed, signed, with a 45×35 mm photo pasted.
- Book a VFS slot if your centre needs one.
- Submit at VFS. Pay fees, hand over passport and file. No interview.
- Track and collect. Sticker: collect passport. eVisa: notice arrives digitally.

You’ll also need an invitation letter and their residence card copy. If they pay, a Letter of Guarantee plus their income proof.
No official minimum. Show steady income and a balance that clearly covers flights, hotels and daily spend. Large last-minute deposits raise questions.
The “Schedule of Stay”: Japan’s Make-or-Break Page
Japan asks for a day-by-day plan on its own form. Vague plans are a top reason for refusals.
Day 3 · Tokyo: Senso-ji, Asakusa → Ueno Park → Akihabara. Stay: Hotel Gracery Shinjuku.
Place names, area, hotel. Feels real.
Day 3: Sightseeing.
Says nothing. Officer can’t picture your trip.
- 📍 One row per day, from arrival to departure.
- 📍 Include contact and address of the hotel each night.
- 📍 City changes (Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka) must match hotel bookings.
- 📍 Keep 1–3 sights per day. Realistic beats ambitious.
What Happens at VFS (Practically)
- Security + token. Show appointment (if needed) and passport.
- Counter check. Staff go through your file against the checklist.
- Fix on the spot. Missing copy? Many centres have a paid photocopy desk.
- Pay. Visa fee + VFS fee. UAE note: Japan visa fee is in AED at the centre.
- Receipt. Keep it — needed for tracking and collection.
⏳ Usually 20–45 minutes. No interview, no biometrics.
🛂 Is my passport kept?
- Sticker visa: yes, until processing ends.
- Don’t plan other trips in that window.
- Need it urgently? Ask VFS about withdrawal.

- Japan usually doesn’t give a reason.
- Reapplying for the same purpose is generally not accepted for 6 months.

No. You submit documents at VFS. Rarely, the embassy may call to clarify something.
Can an Indian living in UAE apply in India?
