You’ve seen the photo. A narrow bridge above a lake so blue it looks fake. Mountains that go up until they become glaciers. That’s Olpererhütte — and it looks even better in real life.

The hike starts at the Schlegeis Reservoir (1,800m) and climbs 600 vertical meters to the stone-and-timber mountain hut at 2,389m. It’s a moderate-hard trail: well-marked, never dangerous, but absolutely not a casual stroll. Pack your boots, start early, and earn that view.

We stayed in Dorfgastein (3 hrs away) and drove in — it’s a beautiful alpine base and worth the drive. This guide has everything you need from a traveller who’s actually done it.

Why This Hike Is Worth Every Step

  • Day 1: Arrive at Mayrhofen. Evening walk around valley.
  • Day 2: Full Olpererhütte day hike + bridge
  • Overnight at the hut — dormitory beds (book ahead!)
  • Day 3: Sunrise over the glacier. Extend to Friesenberghaus.
  • Return via Berlin High Trail section
  • Best for: real hikers who want the full Zillertal immersion
💡 Insider Hack

Staying overnight at Olpererhütte means you get the hut at sunset and sunrise — when 95% of day visitors are already gone. Silence, glaciers turning pink, and a wine list that’ll surprise you. Book months in advance — it fills up fast.

🥾 The Trail — What to Expect

Route: Direct via Trail 502 (Most Popular)

The Suspension Bridge

Alternative: Longer Circuit via Friesenberghaus

Smart Move vs Tourist Move

✅ Smart Move
❌ Tourist Move
Arrive at Schlegeis before 9 AM to get parking
Roll up at 11 AM — park 2 km away and add an extra hike you didn’t plan for
Bring cash for the toll booth — no cards accepted
Expect to pay by card. Get turned back at the toll.
Wear proper hiking shoes — trail is rocky and often wet
Show up in trainers. Slip on wet stones halfway up.
Order à la carte at the hut — half-board portions are small
Pre-pay half board and leave the hut still hungry
Visit the bridge early in the morning — almost no queue
Arrive at noon. Wait 45 mins for a bridge photo with crowds in the background.
Pack a warm layer — it’s often below 10°C at the top even in July
Go up in a t-shirt. Shiver through your lunch.

💡 Money-Saving Tips

💡 Insider Hack

Driving? Split the toll with hiking partners — the €14–17 fee is per car, not per person. A group of 4 means each person pays ~€4. Massive value for what you get.

Hidden Gems Most Visitors Miss

01

The Hut’s Wine List

Seriously underrated. The Olpererhütte serves wine at 2,389m and it’s actually good. Most people just order beer. Don’t be most people.

02

Resident Goats

The hut has a small population of alpine goats who roam the terrace. They’re used to hikers and will happily photobomb your lunch.

03

Friesenberghaus Detour

Continue 2 hrs past Olpererhütte to Friesenberghaus at 2,498m. Dramatic views, almost no crowds, and a glacier lake (Friesenbergsee) tucked below.

🗺 Getting There & Logistics

🚗

  • Up to 19 buses/day, from 5:30 AM
  • Last bus back from reservoir: 6:10 PM
  • Buy tickets on the bus
  • Total from Innsbruck: ~3.5–4.5 hrs
🏨

Where to Stay

  • Mayrhofen — closest town, 50 min by bus
  • Innsbruck — city base, 2 hrs by car
  • Salzburg — 2.5–3 hrs, best for multi-day trips
  • Dorfgastein — our pick, beautiful alpine village
  • Olpererhütte — overnight in the hut (book early!)
  • Dormitory-style beds, bring sleeping bag liner
  • Book via the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV)
💡 Tunnel Warning

The Schlegeis Alpine Road has several one-way tunnels controlled by traffic lights. Wait times are 10–15 minutes each. Factor this into your morning drive — it’s not a slow road, but those tunnels are a surprise if you don’t know about them.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

⚠️ Don’t Make These Errors
  • Arriving without cash: The toll booth is cash-only. No ATM nearby. Bring at least €20 per car.
  • Showing up in trainers: The trail is rocky, wet, and steep. Hiking boots are mandatory — not optional.
  • Starting after 10 AM in peak summer: Parking fills up, the bridge queues grow, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Alps.
  • Skipping the suspension bridge: It’s only 5 minutes past the hut. We’ve heard of people who turned back without seeing it. Unforgivable.
  • Not packing a warm layer: Even in July, temperatures at 2,389m are regularly below 10°C. Sudden cloud cover is real.
  • Planning to drive a motorhome: Vans, caravans, and motorhomes are banned past the toll station. You’ll need to park lower and take the bus.
