Five observation decks. All shouting that they’re the best. All charging like it.

I did all of them on one trip. Different days, different light, different moods. And the ranking that came out of it is not the one the marketing says.

More importantly โ€” I paid almost nothing. Because I refused to buy standard tickets. Here’s exactly how that worked. ๐Ÿ‘‡

The Verdict First (No Scrolling Required)

๐Ÿฅ‡ Winner

Top of the Rock

โœ” Only deck where the Empire State Building is in your photo

โœ” Central Park laid out end-to-end behind you

โœ” Go at 9:00am. Empty deck, soft light, no elbows

Best morning skyline in NYC. Not close.

๐Ÿฅˆ Runner-Up

Edge at Hudson Yards

โœ” Fully open-air deck โ€” wind, sound, the real thing

โœ” True 360ยฐ sweep, plus the glass floor

โœ” Go at sunset. West-facing over the Hudson. It’s the one

Best evening deck. Best photos of you.

โš  Skip if short on time

The Other Three

๐Ÿ‘‰ SUMMIT โ€” art installation first, view second. Also not on Go City.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Empire State โ€” you’re standing on the icon, so it’s missing from your shot.

๐Ÿ‘‰ One World โ€” highest, most enclosed, furthest from Midtown.

All 5 NYC Observation Decks, Ranked Honestly

1. Top of the Rock โ€” the one that gets the shot

30 Rockefeller Plaza ยท 3 decks, floors 67/69/70 ยท up to 850 ft

๐Ÿ‘‰ The Empire State Building sits dead centre in every frame.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Central Park spreads out the other way. Two icons, one deck.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The 70th floor is open-air with no glass in the way โ€” clean photos, no reflections.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Once you’re inside, there’s no time limit. Stay as long as you like.

๐Ÿ’ก Book the first slot of the day. 9:00am. That’s the whole hack.

2. Edge at Hudson Yards โ€” the one you feel

30 Hudson Yards ยท Level 100 ยท 1,100 ft, outdoor

๐Ÿ‘‰ A triangular platform that juts 80 ft out from the building face. Nothing under you but glass.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Open air. Real wind. The city noise actually reaches you.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The angled glass walls lean outward โ€” that’s the “floating over NYC” photo everyone has.

๐Ÿ‘‰ 360ยฐ means Midtown one side, Hudson sunset the other.

๐Ÿ’ก Book 45 mins before sunset. You get gold hour, sunset and blue hour on one ticket.

3. SUMMIT One Vanderbilt โ€” the experience, not the view

45 E 42nd St ยท glass skyboxes at 1,063 ft

๐Ÿ‘‰ Three floors of mirrored rooms, light and sound. It’s an art piece with a window.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The Empire State view is genuinely great โ€” level with it, not craning up at it.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Mirror floors = dress accordingly. Everyone finds out the hard way.

โš  Not included on the Go City New York pass. This one you pay for.

๐Ÿ’ก Worth it if you love design. Skip it if you just want the skyline.

4. Empire State Building โ€” history, not photos

350 5th Ave ยท 86th floor at 1,050 ft ยท 102nd floor extra

๐Ÿ‘‰ The Art Deco build-up and exhibits are genuinely brilliant.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Built in 410 days. Stand there and let that land.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The 86th-floor deck is outdoor and heated year-round.

โš  But the best building in the skyline is the one you’re standing on. It can’t be in your photo.

๐Ÿ’ก Go at night if you go. Lights, lower crowds, better payoff.

5. One World Observatory โ€” highest, least interesting

Lower Manhattan ยท 102nd floor, 1,268 ft โ€” NYC’s highest deck

๐Ÿ‘‰ Fully enclosed. Glass between you and everything.

๐Ÿ‘‰ You’re downtown, so Midtown’s icons are far away and small.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The elevator ride time-lapse is the best bit. That’s telling.

โœ” Genuinely worth it if you’re already doing the 9/11 Memorial that day.

๐Ÿ’ก Pair it with 9/11 Memorial. Both are on the same pass.

๐Ÿ‘‰ 1 Day vs 3 Days

If you only have 1 day

โœ” Top of the Rock at 9:00am

โœ” Edge 45 mins before sunset

โœ” Nothing else. Two decks, done properly

Morning icon + evening thrill = full picture.

If you have 3 days

โœ” Day 1 โ€” Top of the Rock (am) + Empire State (night)

โœ” Day 2 โ€” One World + 9/11 Memorial (downtown block)

โœ” Day 3 โ€” SUMMIT (afternoon) + Edge (sunset)

Never two decks back-to-back. You’ll stop seeing them.

The 50% Saving, Shown in Actual Numbers ๐Ÿ’ฐ

I bought zero standard deck tickets. Everything below is 2026 walk-up pricing versus what I actually paid on the NYC Go City All-Inclusive Pass.

Observation Deck Standard Ticket (peak, 2026) What I Paid on Go City
Top of the Rock up to $65 $0 โ€” included
Edge at Hudson Yards up to $69 $0 โ€” included
Empire State Building up to $57 $0 โ€” included
One World Observatory up to $48 $0 โ€” included
SUMMIT One Vanderbilt ~$54 โš  Not on the pass โ€” pay separately
4 pass decks ยท total $239 per person $0 extra

How the maths actually hits 50%

๐Ÿ‘‰ 4 decks at the gate = $239 per person.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Add MoMA ($30), Natural History ($43), 9/11 Museum ($36) and Intrepid ($38).

๐Ÿ‘‰ Gate value = $386 per person.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Go City All-Inclusive starts at $169 and covers all 107 attractions.

That’s the 50%. It isn’t a discount โ€” it’s density.

โš  Pass prices are dynamic and scale with the number of days. Check live pricing before you buy.

Smart Move vs Tourist Move

โœ” Smart Move

โœ” Pass first, then plan the days around it

โœ” Top of the Rock at opening, Edge at sunset

โœ” Reserve deck time slots 24โ€“48 hrs ahead

โœ” Stack a museum on the same pass day

โœ” Two decks max per day, spaced apart

โš  Tourist Move

โš  Buying five separate gate tickets at peak rates

โš  Booking every deck for sunset โ€” the priciest slot

โš  Walking up with no reservation and queuing 60 mins

โš  Doing three decks in one day and remembering none

โš  Assuming SUMMIT is on the pass. It isn’t.

Money-Saving Tips ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿ’ก Insider Hack #1

Deck prices are dynamic. Top of the Rock swings from about $47 on lean days to $60 on peak days. A pass flattens that to zero โ€” so your pass is worth most exactly when tickets cost most.

๐Ÿ’ก Insider Hack #2

The pass only activates on your first attraction โ€” and stays valid a year from purchase. Buy on a sale. Activate on your trip.

๐Ÿ’ก Insider Hack #3

Reserving a time slot does not activate your pass. So lock in your 9am Top of the Rock and sunset Edge weeks before you fly. Zero risk.

๐Ÿ’ก Insider Hack #4

The pass gets you in โ€” not up. Top of the Rock’s Beam and Skylift cost $15 each on the day. Budget for them or skip them consciously.

Good to Know Before You Go โœ”

Booking

๐Ÿ‘‰ Most decks require a reservation even with a pass

๐Ÿ‘‰ Book at least 24 hours ahead

๐Ÿ‘‰ Sunset and weekend slots sell out first

On the day

๐Ÿ‘‰ Security and bag check at every deck

๐Ÿ‘‰ Top of the Rock runs 9am to midnight, last entry 11pm

๐Ÿ‘‰ Edge is outdoors. Wind is real. Bring a layer

Money

๐Ÿ‘‰ Non-activated passes are refundable within 90 days

๐Ÿ‘‰ No extra student or senior discount on top

๐Ÿ‘‰ Upgrades are paid at the attraction, not on the pass

Photos

๐Ÿ‘‰ Top of the Rock 70th floor = no glass, no glare

๐Ÿ‘‰ Edge’s angled walls = the lean-out shot

๐Ÿ‘‰ Enclosed decks: press the lens flat to the glass

Hidden Gems Nobody Tells You

๐Ÿ“ The Weather Room, Top of the Rock. Indoor bar on the way down. Same view, a seat, no wind.

๐Ÿ“ Skyline Steps at Edge. Tiered outdoor seating. Everyone crowds the glass floor and misses these.

๐Ÿ“ Aprรจs at SUMMIT. The only open-air sky cafรฉ in Midtown.

๐Ÿ“ The Joie Chandelier. 14,000 Swarovski crystals at the Top of the Rock entrance. People walk straight past it.

๐Ÿ“ Free alternative: the Staten Island Ferry. Zero dollars, full harbour skyline, both directions.

Logistics

Getting there

๐Ÿ‘‰ Top of the Rock โ€” B/D/F/M to 47โ€“50th St Rockefeller Center

๐Ÿ‘‰ Edge โ€” 7 train to 34th St Hudson Yards

๐Ÿ‘‰ SUMMIT โ€” Grand Central. It’s inside the station complex

๐Ÿ‘‰ One World โ€” A/C/E or R/W to WTC / Cortlandt

Local transport

๐Ÿ‘‰ Tap OMNY with the same card every ride

๐Ÿ‘‰ 12 paid rides in a week, then it’s free

๐Ÿ‘‰ Midtown decks are walkable from each other

๐Ÿ‘‰ Never take a cab at 5pm. Ever

Stay options

๐Ÿ‘‰ Midtown โ€” 3 of 5 decks on foot

๐Ÿ‘‰ Hudson Yards โ€” good for Edge, dead at night

๐Ÿ‘‰ LIC or Jersey City โ€” cheaper, one stop out

๐Ÿ‘‰ Anywhere on a subway line beats a “nice” street

Quick tips

๐Ÿ‘‰ Check the forecast. Fog kills a $65 view

๐Ÿ‘‰ Rebook a slot rather than go up in cloud

๐Ÿ‘‰ Small bag only. Big ones slow security

๐Ÿ‘‰ Winter = crisper air, sharper skyline

Common Mistakes โš ๏ธ

โš ๏ธ Doing all five. After deck three, they blur. Two is the right number.

โš ๏ธ Going up the Empire State for the photo. The photo you want is of it, not from it.

โš ๏ธ Buying the pass on your last day. It’s day-based. You paid for time you can’t use.

โš ๏ธ Booking sunset everywhere. Most expensive slot, longest queue, worst light for Midtown.

โš ๏ธ Assuming SUMMIT is included. It isn’t on the New York pass. Plan that cost in.

โš ๏ธ Buying a pass for a lazy trip. Two attractions a day or fewer? Just buy tickets.

So โ€” which one?

Top of the Rock in the morning. Edge at sunset.

Two decks. One pass. Half the price.
