For years, Dubai to Abu Dhabi meant one thing: Sheikh Zayed Road and a lot of brake lights.
Since 30 September 2026, there’s a train. AED 39. Wi-Fi. No speed cameras to worry about.
I’ve ridden it, filmed it, and timed every connection. π Here’s the honest version β not the press release.

Verdict
Etihad Rail AED 39β59 64 min + connections β Best for solo & couples
Driving Fuel + Salik + parking 75β120 min β Best for 3β4 people
Intercity bus Cheapest ~2 hrs Budget only
Taxi / Uber AED 250+ 75β120 min β οΈ Only if expensing it
β Problems it solves
No 2-hour drive. No E11 traffic stress.
Fixed journey time β 64 min, every time.
Work, scroll or nap with free Wi-Fi.
No car? Abu Dhabi is now easy and cheap.
Tourists skip renting a car for one day.
β Problems it doesn’t solve
Not door-to-door β both stations sit outside the centre.
No evenings in Abu Dhabi β last train back is 5:43 pm.
Families of 4 often pay more than driving.
No direct link to Yas Island or AUH airport.
Only 5 trains each way β big midday gaps.
π My verdict
Live near the Red Line and travelling solo or as a pair? Take the train. Family of four heading to Yas? Drive.
β οΈ Practical Challenges Nobody Mentions
The Abu Dhabi end is in MBZ City. The Corniche is still a 30β40 min ride away.
The 400 m Metro bridge in Dubai is fine β until it’s 40Β°C and you’re carrying bags.
Shuttles run every 30β55 min , 7 amβ9 pm. Miss one and you wait.
No connection guarantee for the Metro or shuttle. A delay there is your problem.
Only 265 parking spaces at Al Yalayis. Check availability while booking.
Cheap seats sell first. Book late and AED 39 becomes AED 59.
β Smart Move
Book Saver online a week ahead. Add the AED 10 shuttle and nol day pass at checkout. One QR, done.
β Tourist Move
Turn up, buy at the machine for ~AED 60, then queue for a taxi at MBZ City.
