Best Observation Deck in NYC (All 5 Ranked) — And How I Visited Them at 50% Cost

I climbed all five. Two are worth your money. One is overrated.

Here’s the honest ranking, the exact right time to visit each — and the pass trick that cut my bill in half.

Five observation decks. All shouting that they’re the best. All charging like it.

I did all of them on one trip. Different days, different light, different moods. And the ranking that came out of it is not the one the marketing says.

More importantly — I paid almost nothing. Because I refused to buy standard tickets. Here’s exactly how that worked. 👇

1. Top of the Rock — the one that gets the shot

30 Rockefeller Plaza · 3 decks, floors 67/69/70 · up to 850 ft

👉 The Empire State Building sits dead centre in every frame.

👉 Central Park spreads out the other way. Two icons, one deck.

👉 The 70th floor is open-air with no glass in the way — clean photos, no reflections.

👉 Once you’re inside, there’s no time limit. Stay as long as you like.

💡 Book the first slot of the day. 9:00am. That’s the whole hack.

2. Edge at Hudson Yards — the one you feel

30 Hudson Yards · Level 100 · 1,100 ft, outdoor

👉 A triangular platform that juts 80 ft out from the building face. Nothing under you but glass.

👉 Open air. Real wind. The city noise actually reaches you.

👉 The angled glass walls lean outward — that’s the “floating over NYC” photo everyone has.

👉 360° means Midtown one side, Hudson sunset the other.

💡 Book 45 mins before sunset. You get gold hour, sunset and blue hour on one ticket.

3. SUMMIT One Vanderbilt — the experience, not the view

45 E 42nd St · glass skyboxes at 1,063 ft

👉 Three floors of mirrored rooms, light and sound. It’s an art piece with a window.

👉 The Empire State view is genuinely great — level with it, not craning up at it.

👉 Mirror floors = dress accordingly. Everyone finds out the hard way.

⚠ Not included on the Go City New York pass. This one you pay for.

💡 Worth it if you love design. Skip it if you just want the skyline.

4. Empire State Building — history, not photos

350 5th Ave · 86th floor at 1,050 ft · 102nd floor extra

👉 The Art Deco build-up and exhibits are genuinely brilliant.

👉 Built in 410 days. Stand there and let that land.

👉 The 86th-floor deck is outdoor and heated year-round.

⚠ But the best building in the skyline is the one you’re standing on. It can’t be in your photo.

💡 Go at night if you go. Lights, lower crowds, better payoff.

5. One World Observatory — highest, least interesting

Lower Manhattan · 102nd floor, 1,268 ft — NYC’s highest deck

👉 Fully enclosed. Glass between you and everything.

👉 You’re downtown, so Midtown’s icons are far away and small.

👉 The elevator ride time-lapse is the best bit. That’s telling.

✔ Genuinely worth it if you’re already doing the 9/11 Memorial that day.

💡 Pair it with 9/11 Memorial. Both are on the same pass.

How the maths actually hits 50%

👉 4 decks at the gate = $239 per person.

👉 Add MoMA ($30), Natural History ($43), 9/11 Museum ($36) and Intrepid ($38).

👉 Gate value = $386 per person.

👉 Go City All-Inclusive starts at $169 and covers all 107 attractions.

That’s the 50%. It isn’t a discount — it’s density.

Deck prices are dynamic. Top of the Rock swings from about $47 on lean days to $60 on peak days. A pass flattens that to zero — so your pass is worth most exactly when tickets cost most.

The pass only activates on your first attraction — and stays valid a year from purchase. Buy on a sale. Activate on your trip.

Reserving a time slot does not activate your pass. So lock in your 9am Top of the Rock and sunset Edge weeks before you fly. Zero risk.

The pass gets you in — not up. Top of the Rock’s Beam and Skylift cost $15 each on the day. Budget for them or skip them consciously.

📍 The Weather Room, Top of the Rock. Indoor bar on the way down. Same view, a seat, no wind.

📍 Skyline Steps at Edge. Tiered outdoor seating. Everyone crowds the glass floor and misses these.

📍 Après at SUMMIT. The only open-air sky café in Midtown.

📍 The Joie Chandelier. 14,000 Swarovski crystals at the Top of the Rock entrance. People walk straight past it.

📍 Free alternative: the Staten Island Ferry. Zero dollars, full harbour skyline, both directions.

⚠️ Doing all five. After deck three, they blur. Two is the right number.

⚠️ Going up the Empire State for the photo. The photo you want is of it, not from it.

⚠️ Buying the pass on your last day. It’s day-based. You paid for time you can’t use.

⚠️ Booking sunset everywhere. Most expensive slot, longest queue, worst light for Midtown.

⚠️ Assuming SUMMIT is included. It isn’t on the New York pass. Plan that cost in.

⚠️ Buying a pass for a lazy trip. Two attractions a day or fewer? Just buy tickets.
