Olpererhütte & the Suspension Bridge — Austria’s Most Epic Day Hike

You’ve seen the photo. A narrow bridge above a lake so blue it looks fake. Mountains that go up until they become glaciers. That’s Olpererhütte — and it looks even better in real life.

The hike starts at the Schlegeis Reservoir (1,800m) and climbs 600 vertical meters to the stone-and-timber mountain hut at 2,389m. It’s a moderate-hard trail: well-marked, never dangerous, but absolutely not a casual stroll. Pack your boots, start early, and earn that view.

We stayed in Dorfgastein (3 hrs away) and drove in — it’s a beautiful alpine base and worth the drive. This guide has everything you need from a traveller who’s actually done it.

The Hut’s Wine List

Seriously underrated. The Olpererhütte serves wine at 2,389m and it’s actually good. Most people just order beer. Don’t be most people.

The hut has a small population of alpine goats who roam the terrace. They’re used to hikers and will happily photobomb your lunch.

Friesenberghaus Detour

Continue 2 hrs past Olpererhütte to Friesenberghaus at 2,498m. Dramatic views, almost no crowds, and a glacier lake (Friesenbergsee) tucked below.

💡 Tunnel Warning

The Schlegeis Alpine Road has several one-way tunnels controlled by traffic lights. Wait times are 10–15 minutes each. Factor this into your morning drive — it’s not a slow road, but those tunnels are a surprise if you don’t know about them.

Arriving without cash: The toll booth is cash-only. No ATM nearby. Bring at least €20 per car.
Showing up in trainers: The trail is rocky, wet, and steep. Hiking boots are mandatory — not optional.
Starting after 10 AM in peak summer: Parking fills up, the bridge queues grow, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Alps.
Skipping the suspension bridge: It’s only 5 minutes past the hut. We’ve heard of people who turned back without seeing it. Unforgivable.
Not packing a warm layer: Even in July, temperatures at 2,389m are regularly below 10°C. Sudden cloud cover is real.
Planning to drive a motorhome: Vans, caravans, and motorhomes are banned past the toll station. You’ll need to park lower and take the bus.
